Weight Loss Surgery Q & A
What is weight loss surgery?
Weight loss surgery, or bariatric surgery, includes several types of surgical interventions that use one or both of the following procedures:
Restrictive
Restrictive weight loss surgery limits the amount of food you can consume by reducing the size of your stomach. As a result, you feel full while eating less.
Malabsorptive
Malabsorptive weight loss surgery bypasses part of your small intestine, which reduces the number of calories absorbed from the food you eat.
Who is a candidate for weight loss surgery?
To be considered for bariatric surgery, you should have a history of unsuccessfully trying to lose weight, or not being able to maintain weight loss. You also have to meet one of the following criteria:
- Body mass index (BMI) of 40 or above or more than 100 pounds overweight
- BMI of 35 or above with at least two obesity-related health conditions
What are the different types of weight loss surgery?
The doctors at Rockwall Surgical Specialists perform weight loss surgery using minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures. The doctors will recommend either lap band or gastric sleeve surgery depending on your unique situation.
Lap band
During lap band, or gastric band, surgery, the doctors place an inflatable band around the upper portion of your stomach, leaving a small pouch above the band and the remainder of the stomach below the band. The small pouch limits the amount of food you can eat, while a small opening created by the band lets food pass through your stomach and small intestine. Your surgeon can adjust the size of the opening and remove the lap band.
Gastric sleeve
Gastric sleeve surgery is performed by removing about 80% of your stomach, which significantly reduces the amount of food you can eat. This surgery also changes hormones that help regulate hunger, feeling full, and blood sugar.
